Listowel Memorial Hospital Breast Health Centre

The Listowel Memorial Hospital Breast Health Centre provides a number of services to our area. Our primary goal is the early detection of breast cancer. We are proud to have 2 Digital Mammography Units and 2 Ultrasound machines in our Diagnostic Imaging Department.

The Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP) is a program operated by Cancer Care Ontario and funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. It is a program available to women between the ages of 50 – 74 who have no acute breast symptoms, no personal breast cancer history, no breast implants, and have not had a mammogram within the past 12 months.

The OBSP screens women 50 years of age and over without a requisition from their physician and automatically recalls clients until the age of 74. Clients over the age of 74 are encouraged to consult with their family physician about continued screening. Mammogram results are mailed directly to the client and their physician if the client wishes. Appointments may be booked at the Listowel site by calling (519)291-5490. OBSP mammograms are scheduled Mondays and Wednesdays from 8am – 4pm. Registration is required upon arrival at the Diagnostic Imaging reception.

Routine screening mammograms are done on women, over the age of 30, who have a request from their physician and who are not experiencing any breast concerns. Results are given to the ordering physician. These exams are booked on a routine basis Mon. – Fri. 9a.m. – 4p.m. To set up an appointment call the Diagnostic Imaging reception at (519)291- 3125 x 6227.
Requisitions are required at time of appointment.

Diagnostic mammograms are used to evaluate a patient with abnormal clinical findings, such as lump(s), nipple discharge, pain, etc. These exams are done on both women and men with the request of their physician on a more urgent basis. Often, further images and Ultrasound are required, as determined by the Radiologist. The diagnostic mammograms are done Mon. – Fri. from 9a.m. – 4p.m. appointments can be made by calling the Diagnostic Imaging reception at (519)291-3125 x 6227.
Requisitions are required at time of appointment.

Breast Ultrasound is used to help diagnose breast abnormalities detected by a physician during a physical exam and to characterize potential abnormalities seen on a mammogram. Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of the internal structures of the breasts and is extremely useful to determine if an abnormality is solid or fluid-filled or both. A requisition is required from a physician for an ultrasound exam. These are performed Mon. – Fri. 8a.m. – 5p.m. and can be booked by calling (519)291-3125 x 6227.

After a mammogram has been read by a Radiologist, additional images and ultrasound are often required. If the Radiologist is suspicious of a breast abnormality an Ultrasound Guided Breast Biopsy may be recommended as the next step. Ultrasound provides “real-time” images and is therefore used to guide the Radiologist in obtaining tissue samples of the area in question. The tissue samples are then sent to the lab for diagnosis. Biopsies are booked Mon. and Wed. mornings or as per Staff Radiologist.

Again, using ultrasound guidance, a Breast Cyst Aspiration is performed by a Radiologist using a fine needle inserted into the breast cyst. The fluid is collected, if applicable, and sent to the lab for diagnosis. A follow-up mammogram maybe required following a Breast Cyst Aspiration. These are performed Mon. and Wed. morning or as per Staff Radiologist.

A Needle Localization is a procedure done prior to breast surgery to locate a breast abnormality seen on a mammogram or ultrasound image, or to verify the location of an already diagnosed breast cancer. A Radiologist and technologist work together to put a fine, thread-like wire as close as possible to the area of concern. With the wire in place, the surgeon can do surgery knowing exactly which area of tissue to remove. These exams are booked in co-operation with the Operating Room.

The Breast Health Centre Staff at Listowel Memorial Hospital is proud to offer these services to the surrounding area.
