Hospital Acquired Infections

HOSPITAL ACQUIRED INFECTIONS- PUBLIC REPORTING

LWHA takes your care and safety very seriously, and we are committed to transparency. On a monthly basis, beginning in September 2008, we began reporting our Clostridium difficile (C. difficile) infection rates on our website and flowed later with the Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Vancomycin Resistant Enterococcus (VRE) bacteremia rates, and Hand Hygiene Compliance.

C. difficile Rate:

The C. difficile rate is calculated as a rate per 1,000 patient days.

The “total patient days” represents the sum of the number of days which services were provided to all inpatients during a given time period.

The rate is calculated as follows:

Number of new hospital acquired cases of C. difficile in our facility x 1000

Total number of patient days (for one month)

MRSA and VRE Rates:

Hospitals are asked to report MRSA and VRE bacteremia, that is, the presence of MRSA or VRE in the bloodstream. The rate is calculated as a rate per 1,000 patient days.

The “total patient days” represents the sum of the number of days which services were provided to all inpatients during a given time period.

These rates are calculated as follows:

MRSA bacteremia infection rate:

Number of new hospital acquired cases in our facility x 1000

Total number of patient days (for one month)

VRE bacteremia infection rate:

Number of new hospital acquired cases in our facility x 1000
