How We Keep Our Staff Healthy

LWHA has a Full-Time Occupational Health Services Program that is dedicated to helping improve our employee’s health and wellness. The focus of the program is to look at employee health through a holistic lens that considers every aspect of a workers occupational health. Apart from confidential health screening and counseling, our program offers an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and a number of wellness activities and resources.

Our EAP is free to all of our employees and their family members! Our EAP offers a wide variety of services such as counseling (abuse, addictions, family, emotional, trauma and work), legal services (divorce, wills, personal injury) and financial services (budgeting, debt management).

There are a number of wellness activities and resources available through the OHS program such as an immunization program, free chair massages, pedometer sign out and much more.

Student placements

We support our community youth in their educational quest to join the healthcare field! Providing students with the opportunity to complete a rural placement showcases the nature of healthcare within our facilities.

We offer:

Secondary school co-op placements – in cooperation with our local secondary schools, we provide an exciting, varied co-op rotation that helps students to narrow down the area of healthcare that they wish to pursue in the post-secondary studies.

Consolidation or Internship placements – we have affiliations with a variety of post-secondary education facilities and offer placements for many students including: nursing students (BScN and RPN), allied health (Speech language pathologist, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Nutrition and Dietetics, Pharmacy Technician, Diagnostics etc), and medical office administration students. If you are interested in this type of placement, please have your faculty advisor contact Brenda Rutherford at the Wingham site (Brenda.rutherford@lwha.ca) or Rhonda Scheeringa at the Listowel site (Rhonda.scheeringa@lwha.ca).

Medical student placements - Wingham & District Hospital is affiliated with the Southwestern Ontario Medical Education Network (SWOMEN). SWOMEN supports and helps to coordinate hands on clinical and community experiences for medical students in Southwestern Ontario.

Wingham has two preceptors associated with the University of Western Ontario who provide a teaching environment in a rural setting allowing medical students an opportunity to experience rural healthcare at its finest. Elective opportunities may be coordinated by contacting SWOMEN directly or by contacting Jan McKague-Weishar, Recruitment Officer, Wingham and District Hospital. winghamrecruitment@lwha.ca or Kim Kowch, Health Care Recruiter, North Perth Family Health Team kkowch@northperth.ca
